Main function of insulin is to take the sugar out of the blood. It is important to take the sugar out of blood because it is highly inflammatory in nature and it causes damage to the endothelial cells in the blood vessels which further becomes a cause to bigger lifestyle diseases. Insulin performs this function by doing two things:

1. Direct sugar in cells to produce energy: Insulin is released by the pancreas in response to carbohydrates/sugar consumed in the diet. It is the key to allow conversion of sugar to energy in cells through ATP.

2. Deposit unused sugar: When the cells are insulin resistant and not willing to take in sugar to produce energy or if we’re providing more than required carbohydrates/sugar, to remove excess sugar from blood, the body converts it to fat and stores it in adipose tissue.
